Whereas the king by charter has granted to
Henry, earl of Lancaster the town, castle and place of Bergerac, inasmuch as
these are on the frontier of his enemies he grants that during the war there
shall stay in the town and castle a hundred men of arms and two hundred
servants on foot at his wages for the garrison of these; on the understanding
that such men and servants be attendant unto the seneschal of Gascony and when
necessary go with him on the king's service, leaving always a sufficient number
for the garrison in the town and castle. The constable of

castle, town and place of Bergerac, in the diocese of Perigeux, which he had
lately taken by a stout assault, with the castellany, justice high and low, and

The like to them shewing that since making of
the said grant to the earl the king has learned that at the time of taking the
same the earl, as lieutenant of the king, granted for life or during pleasure
the bailiwick of the place aforesaid with divers other offices and rents
pertaining to the town and place to divers persons in consideration of their
good service to the king, which grants the king has revoked by his charter, but
that as he would not that these servitors should wholly lose their reward for their
services, he commits it to them to assign them equivalents. By K.

Grant for life to Ralph de Dardenis, for his
good service in the taking of the town and castle of Cannac and elsewhere, of
the office of lieutenant (vicarii) of Cannac, to hold with the lands and
all other things pertaining to that lieutenancy; and it is the king's will that
out of the issues and emoluments arising therefrom he shall receive for his own
use 100 pounds of the small coinage of Tours yearly, as a remuneration for the
said service, and that he shall answer to the constable of Bordeaux for the balance
of such issues and emoluments. By K.
Mandate to the seneschal of
The like to Amaneuus de Balhade, lord of Mote,
for his service in the taking of the town of Burgh and elsewhere, and because
he lately boldly took the town and castle of Cannac in Saintonge, then held by
the king's enemies, of the custody of the same town and castle ; and it is the
king's will that, as a remuneration for his service and to make good his losses
sustained therein, he shall receive for his own use 500 pounds of the said coinage
yearly out of the issues and emoluments of the town and castle and the
appurtenances thereof, answering for the residue as above. By

Inspeximus and confirmation of letters patent of Henry,
earl of Lancaster, Derby and Leicester, steward of England, late the king's
lieutenant and captain general in the duchy of Aquitaine and all Languedoc (Lingua
Occitana), dated at Bordeaux, under the earl's seal, on 8 November, 1346,
reciting that the place of Rougemont (de Rubeo Monte), pertaining, as is
said, to the order of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, by the death
of Sir Bertrand de Gordonio, knight, who in his lifetime adhering to and
serving the said king in the present war of Gascony held the place as his own, remains
at present without defence, and that for the safe keeping of that place he had
granted to Sir John de Stafford, knight of the same order in England, the
custody of that place with all its appurtenances and issues, rents, profits and
moneys whatsoever, saving any homage due to the king, over-lordship and other
right of the king or other, hereby commanding the seneschal of Gascony and the
constable of Bordeaux to put him or his proctor or attorney into actual
possession thereof and manfully maintain him therein. By K.
