Assignment for the payment of 6,000 marks which Henry de Trublevill, seneschal of Gascony, owes of the time that he was seneschal of Gascony before that seneschalcy was committed to Hugh de Vivona, to the following persons, to wit, Ernulf, bishop of Bazas, Rostand de Solio, Raymond le Brun (Bruno), Elias Viger, Bernard de Acre, Rostand Eborard, Raymond Willelmi, Bernard Macheler, Raymond Buche, Arnald de Peregort, William Gaoler, and Peter Bonefuz, of a moiety of the rents, farms and other issues of the city of Bordeaux, as well of the water as of other things, for live years from Michaelmas, in the eighteenth year, by the hands of the said Henry de Trubleville or of him who shall be seneschal of Gascony for the time and by view and testimony of someone put in the place of the above persons, by chirograph made between them. At the expiration of that term the moiety shall revert to the king, but if the above sum shall not have been fully paid to them the king will pay the balance due. The charters of the said Henry of the said debt until the end of the said term shall be placed in a sacred building under the seals of the said bishop of Bazas and the other creditors, and that of the said Henry and at the end of the term, account shall be taken of how much has been paid and so much deducted, and when the residue is paid the said charters and these letters shall be returned to the king.

To the mayor, jurats and commune of Bordeaux. Whereas by their letters and by letters of tho seneschal of Gascony the king is informed that nineteen tuns of wine, which the king seized at Suhampton on account of Arnold de Poregorz, defamed of the crime of heresy (de crimine heredis), belonged to Bonetus del Bosc, their fellow citizen; and as the king cannot at present conveniently satisfy the said Bonetus by reason of debts wherein he is bound to the emperor and others, he commands them to wait patiently until a fortnight after Michaelmas next, and then to send someone to him in England that then he may give satisfaction, according to the price whereat the wines were appraised by the bailiffs of Suhampton to the said Bonetus or his messenger bearing these letters with letters of the mayor &c. of Bordeaux.

Grant to Reginald de Ponte that at All Saints next the king will cause to be paid at the Exchequer at Westminster to him and to Geoffrey de Ponte his son, and to all the knights of his household all arrears of their yearly fees.

Bond to pay Geoffrey Ridel, lord of Blaye, 600 marks on the morrow of All Saints next, at the Exchequer of London, on condition that before taking the same he cause the king to have letters patent as well of Poncius de Mirebel as of Bernard de Royl engaging that he and his heirs will remain faithful in the service of the king and his heirs in the form in which he caused his letters patent to be made to the king, and that if Geoffrey and his heirs withdrew from his service Poncius and Bernard shall be bound to the payment to the king and his heirs of 1,000 marks each. Further, before the payment of the said sum, Geoffrey shall cause the king to have letters of the archbishop of Bordeaux, engaging that he and his successor will excommunicate the said Geoffrey and his heirs if they withdrew, and to place his land under an interdict; such interdict and excommunication not to be released.

To the archbishop of Bordeaux. The king doubts not that he remembers that in the archbishop's presence at London it was provided and granted by G. Ridel, lord of Blaye, that in tenanciam of his good and faithful service he would give to the king as a hostage Agnes daughter of Gerard Ridel his son, and deliver her to the said archbishop to keep in the king's name, until the king should give order for her delivery and commands him to receive her and keep her safely until he receive such order.

Bond to Ernard, or Ernald, de Peregorz in 100l. for wines received from him, whereof the king will repay 50l. at Easter next and 50l. at Michaelmas.

Convention made between Henry king of England and Raymond, count of Toulouse and marquess of Provence.

The king promises to help the count against the king of France and every living man except against the church of Rome, to which he wishes all manner of reverence and due obedience to be shewn, and except against Frederick, emperor of the Romans, his brother in law. He will not make peace, truce or concord with the king of France, or any composition with him, without the licence, assent and will of the said count; and if the church of Rome attack him, and the king of Franco, at the mandate of the pope, rise against him, and enter bis land in person, the king will not desist, at the prayers or admonitions of the church of Rome, from helping him, unless compelled to do so by sentence of excommunication, in which case the king may desist from making war against the king of France, so long as he be personally and by mandate of the- church of Rome in the count's land. But upon his leaving the count's land, the king shall recommence war against him, helping the count as before. For the faithful observance whereof by the king John de Plesseto has sworn on the king's soul by his order, and barons of Bordeaux and of Bazas, to wit, Elias Rudel of Bregerac, Kenguil de Sparre, Arnald de Blanckeforde, Peter de Castillon, Bernard de Scusan, William Segyn de Ryon, Bernard de Boevill, lord of Beneauges, Peter de Gaveret, Gaillard de la Mote, Amaneu de Noillan, William de Farges, Amaneu de Lebret, Nompar (Nemersanz) de Chaumont, William Reimundi de Pinibus, lord of Caumont, William Ernaldi de Tantalon, have sworn the same, by his special command, also the noble men, B. count of Bigorre and Gaston de Byarr' have promised the count to do their utmost to cause the king to observe these things and have given the count letters patent to that effect, with this added, that if the king fail to observe them, he wills that for such time they be absolved from their fealty to him, and may rise against him and help the count against him.

Bond to Elias de Brigerak in 500 marks sterling to be paid in Gascony within a month of Michaelmas, to wit, 300 marks to his own use of the king's gift, and 200 for the strengthening of his town of Brigerak.

Power to W. Lungespeye and Hugh de Vivona to receive into the king's fealty and service those of the parts of Peregoz who have castles or towns and are willing to surrender them to the king, and all others of those parts who are necessary to the king. 

Appointment of William Lungespeye as the king's captain to do the business for which the king has sent him and the others named below to the parts of Peregoz ; and mandate to Herbert son of Matthew, and Hubert Hoese, their household and soldiers to be intendant to him therein.

Sept. 25. Bordeaux.

Request to B. vicomte of Frunzak to join William Lungespeye to go with him on the king's service as he will tell him from the king, and the king will cause his knights whom he takes with him to have their pay (solidos) for the time they remain on the king's service.

Bond to Elias Rydel of Brygerac in 250 marks remaining due to him out of 500 marks given to him by the king for the strengthening of his town of Bregerac, to be paid out of the first money which comes from England.

Bond also to him for the payment out of the same money to him and the knights and Serjeants, whom he maintains in the king's service, as is contained in another writ which he has.

Bond to Goibert de Mayrak to pay to him, for himself and three knights, whom he has in the king's service, out of such money, their wages from Sunday before the feast of St. Severin, 26 Henry III, to Christmas following.

The like to Bertram de Munteses of Puyguilhem (de Podio Willelmi) for himself and four others.

The like to Ruellus son of Elias de Brigerac in 25 marks, which the king promised to him as a gift: also in the wages due to him and four other knights, whom he has in the king's service, for the above period.

Appointment, during pleasure, of William de Munrevel to the custody of the castle of Puynormand (de Podio Normanni); and the king is bound to pay to him being with nine knights in the said castle, and 20 footserjeants, as well balisters as other Serjeants at arms, wages from All Saints onwards so long as they be in the castle by the king's order.

Appointment of William Lungespe as captain of the king's expedition, and it is commanded to all knights in garrison at St Emilion and to the vicomte of Kasteleun and all knights with him in garrison, and to Elias Rydol of Brigerak and the knights there, to be intendant to the said William in all things pertaining to the said expedition.

Bond to Guy de Stisac, who has stayed in the king's service with two knights, Geoffrey de Stisak and Viger, his brothers, and seven mounted Serjeants from the Sunday before Martinmas this year, during pleasure, to remember them according to their service, as soon as the king's money comes from England, so that they shall be content.

Dec. 13. Bordeaux.

Bond to Peter Oger[i] de Gurean in 100 pounds of Bordeaux from the first money that comes from England, and the king retained him in his service at his pay with two knights and seven Serjeants at arms, and has granted that if he lose his land in his service, he will provide him with land elsewhere to the same value.

The king signified to Berard de Muntlid[er] the elder and Berard his son, that a treaty was made with the king by Elias Ridell, of Bregerac and that the king retained them in his service, and during that treaty, the rumour has come to the king that they have taken Matthew Besill and another of the king's household with him and still detain them. The king now requests them to come to speak with him, under the safe conduct of the said Elias, whom the king has empowered to conduct them; and when they come the king will make them content. The king requests them to bring with them his men whom they have captured. Elias Ridell of Bregerac has letters to conduct them.

The king is sending Aman' de la Marche to keep, with Bernard de Betayll, the castles of Begarok [and] Beauver and the lands which by the king's orders he has in his custody, and the said B.is commanded to receive him.

Mandate to Nicholas de Molis, seneschal of Gascony, out of the lands of the kind's enemies of Saintonge in the island of Oleron which are in the king's hands, to assign to Elias de Chillak land to the value of 50 pounds a year of Bordeaux, and to his knights land to a like value, to hold for the lands which they have lost in Peregort and Saintonge, for the king's service; on condition that for whatever part of their land they recover, a like amount be subtracted from the said 100 pounds of land, and if they recover the whole, nothing of the said land remain to them.

Sept. 8. Bordeaux.

Writ of liberate to the treasurer and chamberlains to Agnes de Chillak and Elias her son, for 45 marks a year at the Exchequer in lieu of land to the value of 150 pounds of Bordeaux a year, which the king previously ordered to be assigned to them in the isle of Oleron, for their lands lost in Peregoz and Saintonge for the king's service. And they are to retain the other letters patent containing the assignment of the said land.

The like to Elias de Chillak for 20l. at the Exchequer yearly as above.

Covenant made between the king and Sicard de Mundgwiun at Bordeaux, on Thursday the morrow of the Annunciation. The said Sicard and his heirs shall henceforth hold the castle of La Clote, which he and his ancestors formerly held in alod (alos’), of the king and his heirs, and thereof he did his homage to the king, and they shall do the service of one lance by way of relief (de achato). If the said Sicard or his knights, by reason of this homage and service, lose their lands by war or the king's enemies, the king will, by the award of John son of Geoffrey, and Hugh de Vivona on the king's part, and of Elias Ridel of Brigerak and Achard Fucheri of the part of the said Sicard, make reasonable amends, and in case these cannot attend, the king will select others.

 

And if a truce be entered into between the king and the king of France, the king shall, one year before the end of the truce, by the award of the said arbitrators, give the said Sicard reasonable aid in fortifying his castle, and in making other necessary preparations for war. But by reason of this covenant, if the said Sicard should do homage for the said castle to the king of France, the king shall not withdraw from the truce made or to be made with the king of France. Form of the truce between the king and the king of France. The king makes known that he has, for himself and earl Richard his brother, and his adherents and their lands and fees, made truce with Louis, king of …/

France, and his adherents and their lands and fees, from the feast of St. Benedict the abbot in March until five years after next Michaelmas. The king names amongst his adherents Peter Ogeri, Oliver de Chaleis and Berard de Mundlider: the king of France names amongst his, the count of Toulouse, the count of La Marche, the count William of Auvergne, William Lercevesque (archiepiscopo), Geoffrey de Lezinan, Reginald de Pontibus, Geoffrey de Talneo, Geoffrey and Benedict de Mauritannia, Poncius de Mirebel, Fulk de Mastac lord of Mornae, Elias de Talemont, Elias Gumbaudi de Cosnac, William de Rupe lord of Royan (Roentii), Iter de Berbezi (sic), Peter Reimundi, Peter Bechet, Gawain (Wawan) de Talneo, Geoffrey de Rupe Forti, Raymond de Montaud, Elias Ridelli the younger, Boudin de Grignol, Peter Ais, Fulk de Archiac, Emery de Rupe Chiwardi and Emery his son, Emery de Rupe lord of Blenzac, Ralph de Bello Monte lord of Bressuire (Beceriar), Drew de Monte Ausyer, William de Sancto Quintino, Ebulo de Rupe Forti, Elias de la Vern.

The king will leave the island of Re in the truce on the part of the king of France in the same way that it was in the last truce.

All interceptions during the truce shall be reported to the arbitrators of the truce, for amends to be made, who are, on the king's side, Booz de Mastac count of Bigorre, Geoffrey Rydelli of Blaye and Peter de Burdegola, and on the side of the king of France, the seneschal of Poitou, Geoffrey de Rauncon and Reginald de Pontibus, and if amends are not made by these within two months, the offended party may make an incursion against the offender until he receives amends, and the king may assist his man, and in like manner the king of France, but the lord of the offender may not assist him. If any fortress, or castle, or any noble be taken or furtively withdrawn during the truce by the king of France, or his men, and kept in the power of that king, if upon demand he do not give full satisfaction without delay, the king may forthwith give his help, and also the lord of the castle, fortress or noble may make war against the captor or detainer until full amends are made, and vice versa with regard to the king of France. The king shall, during the truce, remain in the same seisin as he was on the day of the truce, except so far as is expressed above touching the isle of Re and his adherents named above. The king has caused the following to swear to the king of France to observe the truce, to wit, Ralph son of Nicholas, Peter Chaceporc, king's clerk, and Emery de Lacy, and the king binds his heirs hereby to observe the truce. Memorandum that, on Wednesday before Palm Sunday, the king of France's letters of truce were delivered to Peter Chaceporc, keeper of the wardrobe, by the hand of Geoffrey de Wulward, in the chapel of the archbishop of Bordeaux, at Bordeaux. [Foedera]

Notification by Poncius de Agonaco, Peter de Turri, Emery de la Braunde and Elias de Burdella that when the king of England stayed for some time at Saintes, about the feast of St. Mary Magdalen in the twenty-sixth year, they came to his fealty and service and did homage to him for the benefits received from his liberality and to be hereafter received, and by these presents they protest that they are his liege men and that they will be faithful to him and his heirs in truce or in war, and that they will not withdraw from his service in any contingency. In witness whereof the said Emery and Elias, for themselves and Poncius and Peter, have set their seals to this. And it is commanded to the arbitrators of the truce, appointed for the king, that they protect them as his liege men.
